According to the Vedas and Shastras, there are many planets and stars, but only nine (Nav = 9) planets (Grah) and 27 stars (Nakshatras) that fall within the immediate circumference of the solar system are believed to influence human life based on their position in an individual’s natal chart. These nine planets together form an orbit known as the Navagraha Mandal. The nine Grahas in a horoscope govern our karma, desires, and the results of our actions. Each planet exerts its influence through specific periods called Dasa, which can be identified through one’s horoscope.
Navagraha Shanti Puja is performed to reduce the negative effects of planetary influences and to enhance positive energies in a person’s life. The nine planets have specific Kshetras (places of worship) in South India, most of which are located near the Thanjavur district. Navagraha Puja is especially beneficial when a planet’s Dasa or Sub-Dasa is active, when the planet is associated with malefic influences, or when it occupies the 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th house in the horoscope. As per traditional belief, only these nine planets and 27 stars are considered significant in determining planetary effects on human life.
